South Auckland is an area of New Zealand’s largest city, with a young, multicultural population. It is subject to ongoing negative and often racist representations in the media and public discourse. This case study chapter explores Southside Rise, a performance project by Black Friars Theatre Company, which brings together young Pasifika leaders from South Auckland schools to create full-scale, musical theatre productions. The productions navigate answers to questions about what it means to lead in South Auckland. The project aims to honour ancestors, elevate traditional Polynesian literacies and encourage South Auckland’s young people to walk tall in both of their worlds – Pākehā /Palagi and Pasifika.
