This chapter contextualises the need to explore nuanced articulations of change and impact in applied theatre practices working with young people living in urban rather than rural geographical locations drawing upon case studies in Singapore, New Zealand and the UK to offer important contextual rationale, framing and insights into the barriers for change that practitioners need to navigate. Narratives of childhood are discussed as part of the challenges to address within practice working in applied theatre contexts. The intention of the examination of childhood narratives is to reconceptualise constructions of youth to ensure participants are heard, and that their articulations of the location of value in project processes are understood and acknowledged. The chapter introduces the trajectory of the book to outline how the topics of witnessing, change and youth agency will be explored through a conceptual framework and case studies that further debate in discourses of change in the field of applied theatre.
