This chapter analyses six examples of conjoinment as a representative sample of 50 such characters across a range of genres and development studios. I will examine their aesthetics, their lore, and any reliance of their conjoinment for the plot and/or mechanics of the game, providing an analysis that aims to uncover and expose the underpinning ableism. In doing so, I will draw on the foundational concept of the ‘individual’ and show how the doubled spectre of conjoined twins in video games is attractive for developers—not just because of the threat they are used to present to the playable characters—but also to the (presumed non-disabled) player controlling them.

摘要

This chapter analyses six examples of conjoinment as a representative sample of 50 such characters across a range of genres and development studios. I will examine their aesthetics, their lore, and any reliance of their conjoinment for the plot and/or mechanics of the game, providing an analysis that aims to uncover and expose the underpinning ableism. In doing so, I will draw on the foundational concept of the ‘individual’ and show how the doubled spectre of conjoined twins in video games is attractive for developers—not just because of the threat they are used to present to the playable characters—but also to the (presumed non-disabled) player controlling them.
