This chapter examines how Julius Caesar reached the pinnacle of his organisation, maintained and exercised his power and met his sudden and violent end. This chapter starts in April 49 BC when Caesar first arrived in Rome and started exercising political power. It was 3 months after crossing the Rubicon and the beginning of the hostilities in the civil war. The chapter then continues its analysis from the final battle of the civil war in 45 BC until the Ides of March in 44 BC. This chapter, therefore, covers Caesar’s behaviour as the leader of the Republic, most of the time running parallel with his military command. In the years between 49 and 44 BC, Caesar’s geographical authority steadily grew with every piece of territory lost by his adversaries. When the war ended, Caesar was nominated dictator for an unlimited time period. Holding all state powers in one hand would be new to Caesar. Moreover, it propelled Caesar into a level of complexity he had not managed before. Despite all his talents and competencies, his leadership hadn’t developed to meet the level required for the role. He could only realise part of his potential while having absolute power.
