This chapter examines the next ten years of Caesar’s career as a leader in the service of the Republic, from 69 to 59 BC. This period where Caesar ascended through all the ranks of the Roman professional hierarchy is particularly relevant in terms of career progression. Caesar had everything going for him at the start of the formal government career, the cursus honorum. What he was lacking, though, was sufficient funding for his election campaigns. Heavily indebted, he was at risk of running out of money before he could even get his career on track. The following questions will be addressed: How did Caesar leverage his strengths and minimise weaknesses to realise a career and performance that lived up to his potential? What were the key elements that built his career? How did he adapt to his surrounding context? What competition did he encounter from peers, and how did he handle that? How did he establish his brand as a leader? How did he exercise leadership?
