The European Green Deal did not emerge solely from an organic evolution of the EU’s environmental policies since the 1970s but was also a response to a nexus of scientific, societal, policy and political drivers that converged before December 2019 and required a strategic and accelerated reaction to pressing climate challenges. This chapter delves into these critical drivers, highlighting the variety of opinions and interests that paved the way for the European Green Deal.
