Cells are regulated by an enormously complex network of interacting reactions. For example, Fig. 10.1 shows some of the biochemical networks that are involved in control of the cell cycle (discussed in more detail in Sect. 10.4). Although, at first sight, such a network appears to be too complex to be amenable to any simple analysis, a closer inspection reveals that there is a relatively small number of underlying structures or motifs that are put together to form the whole network.
