Climate Change Risks and Adaptation Among Cassava Value Chain Actors in Southeast Nigeria

The study assessed climate change awareness, perceptions, adaptation strategies, and constraints among cassava value chain actors in Southeast Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 360 respondents, with data collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using frequency and mean counts. Results indicated a high awareness of climate change risks, such as extreme heat (x̄ = 4.16), weather fluctuation (x̄ = 4.13), and increased rainfall intensity (x̄ = 4.10). Key perceived effects included changes in rainfall (x̄ = 3.31), environmental degradation (x̄ = 3.26), and product scarcity (x̄ = 3.18). Adaptation strategies included seeking early warning information (x̄ = 3.44), using inorganic fertilizer (x̄ = 3.40), and adjusting planting and harvesting calendars (x̄ = 3.37). However, constraints such as high labour costs (x̄ = 3.79), poor access to market information (x̄ = 3.71), and lack of timely inputs (x̄ = 3.64) hindered effective adaptation. Strengthening climate services, improving access to finance and inputs, promoting sustainable practices, and enhancing infrastructure and policy support are recommended to improve resilience.
