The development of IoT solutions requires expertise in several fields such as microelectronics, telecommunications, computing, data analysis, etc., representing challenges for developers. It is common for IoT solutions to incorporate wireless sensor network (WSN) capabilities, due to the advantages in terms of installation, commissioning and maintenance. WSN can cover areas previously out of physical reach, thus enabling processes to be improved. There are several wireless communication protocols and technologies, each with distinct characteristics, which raises the question of how to define the most appropriate technologies for IoT solutions. The success or failure of a project could depend on this decision since wireless connectivity can be seen as the weak link in any solution, as it will always be susceptible to instabilities in the environment in which it operates. This chapter presents the Three-Phase Methodology for Projects (TpM-Pro), developed to assist developers in selecting appropriate wireless communication resources and to organize the analysis of parameters that must be considered, regardless of technology. Choosing the most suitable technologies involves a project, environment analysis, site survey, and management strategies. The text also presents a direct and objective comparison between various wireless communication protocols and technologies, considering particularities such as range, frequency, data rate and receiver sensitivity. This chapter concludes with a case study that illustrates the application of the TpM-Pro.
