Introduction to Networking Data Integrity and Manipulation in Cyber-Physical and Communication Systems

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) and Communication Systems are pivotal to humanity’s future evolution. CPSs, in particular, consist of a physical component, incorporating sensors and actuators in robots or standalone systems, which monitors and interacts with environmental assets. A cyber component, leveraging Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, extracts knowledge from device data. CPSs support numerous initiatives, including Industry 4.0, Connected Health, Smart Cities, Home Automation, Vehicle to Infrastructure Communication, and Participative Sensing. All these initiatives necessitate the fusion, integration, and manipulation of data from diverse sources and types, prompting the utilization of Internet of Things (IoT) protocols aligned with specific initiative characteristics. This chapter delves into data and its characterization by the four Vs: Volume, Velocity, Variation, and Veracity. Volume refers to the massive data quantity, velocity pertains to data speed, variation addresses data diversity from multiple sources, and veracity correlates with data accuracy.
