The ecosystem services concept and approach aim at a comprehensive economic assessment of all benefits that biological processes and their results have for humans. This economization can support political decision-making processes and strengthen nature conservation efforts, especially where nature represents a public good. However, it also carries risks, in particular, that appreciations of nature which are not based on subjective preferences become overlooked. Moreover, the conceptualization of nature as an ecosystem is inappropriate when it comes to its aesthetic qualities and symbolic meanings.
