Coastal landscapes are defined by their location between the land and the sea and are determined by coasts, which—unless they have been fixed by anthropogenic interventions—are highly dynamic and subject to constant change. Coasts do not form a clear line “between land and sea,”, and in coastal landscapes, two different dynamics meet the ever-changing environment and a human search for predictability and permanence. The Wadden Sea coast provides a vivid example of such a dynamic coastal landscape, shaped by both material changes and changing attributions of meaning. The challenge lies in learning to deal with the dynamics of the landscape.
