In linguistics and also in non-academic contexts, the term “linguistic landscape” is common. However, two different uses must be distinguished: on the one hand, the one based on the auditory reception of spoken language in the examined or own language environment; on the other hand, the one based on the visual reception of written language in public space. Both types of linguistic landscape contain different implications for the speakers, but also for the methodology and questions of linguists who deal with it.
