The paper outlines the Heimatschutz (Heimat conservation) preparation of National Socialist landscape design as a tool for the ‘Germanization’ of conquered Eastern territories. This led to a scientification, which after the Second World War was a crucial prerequisite for the emergence of modern landscape planning as a state planning discipline. Landscape architecture and open space planning opposed this development from their respective perspectives. The latter ‘saved’ under democratic auspices the idea of a careful planning approach to individual everyday life conditions in concrete spaces, which in the face of adaptation to climate change and increasing species loss remains relevant.
