This article deals with the relationship between landscape and nation. Since the late eighteenth century, a hostile nature has gradually been reinterpreted as “landscape”. Travelers discovered remote, “original” or “national” landscapes, where humans should recover from the impositions of modernity or reflect on the nation. Such imaginary landscapes were imagined in different media and in the architectural design of space. Tourists played an important and ambivalent role: A nation was bodily (or: “physically” ?) experienced.
