The term ‘open space planning’ was coined in the 1970s as a social science counterpoint to natural science and design focuses in academic education and professional practice. The prevailing concept of open space planning is derived from approaches established during the Weimar period for a systematic supply of the urban population with open spaces usable for recreation and everyday life. Today, the term is used in an institutional context for planning at the neighborhood or city-wide level or for a social science orientation.
