The ‘conceptual history’ of ‘landscape’ examines the diachronic change in the meaning of this term, within its historical context, as a linguistic part of cultural semantics. In view of the connotation-rich ‘vagueness’ and ambiguity of this term, it especially serves the semantic orientation in a hardly manageable field of meaning and association. As decisive stages, ‘landscape’ can historically be reconstructed as ‘region’, as ‘image’, and as ‘earth space’. Recently, typologies of concept and theory have been developed and approach employing social constructivism and neopragmatic theory has unfolded to meet this task of orientation.
