When the Reality Imposes a Tipping Point: Denialism and Conspiracy Theories in the Evaluations of Bolsonaro’s Performance in Environmental Policies and Covid-19 Responses in Brazil
摘要
Conspiracy theories and denialism have been solidifying within the context of disinformation and political polarization, both stimulating and capitalizing on the lack of interpersonal trust, skepticism towards traditional media and political institutions by discrediting their functions and actors. This study will delve into the denialism and the utilization of conspiracy theories in the dis-course surrounding the evaluation of Brazilian former president Jair Bolsonaro across domains such as the Covid-19 response and the environment. Moreover, this research will present concrete instances where voters lose their inclination to concoct justifications to align with their desired judgments, thereby transcending their echo chambers. The study will analyze 24 in-depth post-election interviews conducted in 2022. The participants encompass ordinary voters.
