In this chapter I discuss George Saunders’ novel Lincoln in the Bardo. After outlining the construction of the First Family in relation to other broken families, I show how the narrative depicts the failure of funeral rites and the crisis of grieving. In the chapter’s final section, I connect the resolution of the ritual impasse to the novel’s therapeutic dimension. Special emphasis is placed on the novel’s strategy to engage the reader in its play of perspectives and its creation of empathy.
