In this chapter I discuss Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel The Virgin Suicides. After looking at its vision of repressive family and gender constellations, I analyse its satirical take on therapeutic measures to aid the suicidal sisters and their environment. Finally, I investigate the orchestration of ritual practices which largely hinges on the male narrators’ evocation of the past and I show how their narrative ritual fails to provide any consolation or cure for those left behind.
