Similar to ‘self’ and ‘nature ‘divinity’ here does not name an entity or a power, but rather a mode of being transcending self and nature. Understood in this way, the question of divinity is responded to in diverse forms. This chapter will explore this theme through discussion of the practice of religion drawing on historical and anthropological sources. Particular attention is paid to the change in the religious understanding of divinity brought about by monotheism. In this respect the relation of divinity to materiality is discussed with respect to idols and to the Incarnation. The relevance of the latter question to the sense of both divine presence and absence is discussed with respect to atheism, monotheism and pantheism. The chapter by turning to the key religious practice of ritual shows how this practice opens up a space for the sacred for a self which silences its own spontaneity through rhythmic action.
