Molecular Mechanisms to Facilitate Recovery After Flooding Attempts to Increase Flood Stress Tolerance in Crops

Over the years, hostile environmental conditions, such as flooding, have severely affected agricultural yield and productivity. Flooding has been highlighted as one of the major abiotic stresses for plant development and food production worldwide. Plant resilience to unfavorable environmental conditions is determined by acclimatization to stress and post-stress recovery. Once the unfavorable conditions have subsided, the recovery phase post-stress plays a significant role in plant survival. Flooding can be considered a sequential stress where the plants encounter stressors during the flooding and post-flooding phases, and the ability to acclimatize to both stages indicates tolerance. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), Abscisic acid (ABA), and ethylene are signaling molecules that activate downstream signaling pathways regulating several aspects of recovery. Along this chapter, we address post-flooding recovery strategies of plants at morphological, anatomical, and physiological levels, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying therein.
