Climate Models Using AI—A Case for the OECS

Disaster preparedness due to climate change is a critical component of climate resilience and risk management in Caribbean islands. In particular, countries in the Global South such as those in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are prone to natural disasters annually due to their geographic location. Increased climate resilience, through proper planning mechanisms, is a key factor in the mitigation of damages and loss of life due to these disasters. In most cases, the necessary data may be available but inaccessible to vulnerable communities. Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are crucial for enhancing disaster preparedness and response by effectively coordinating and activating information for emergency services. In this chapter we review current AI modelling techniques which have been used for this purpose and present a case for the OECS regions using country-level climate variables to predict the risk of a natural disaster. These can be built into scalable models to provide key stakeholders with critical insights and enhanced tools using data-driven approaches for efficient disaster management response in these regions.
