Climate change is an environmental disaster and a human emergency. Drastic increases in world temperatures and other climate-related changes have adversely affected people globally. Millions have become internally displaced or forced to emigrate from their countries of origin. Climate change may affect them on transit or at their destination. People on the move seek protection and humanitarian assistance in their quest for survival. Vulnerable populations are most impacted as they face structural and systemic oppression and possess limited resources to cope with climate disasters. This chapter summarizes findings regarding climate change impact on human livelihoods in Central and South America, Horn of Africa, South Asia, the Mediterranean Basin and South Eastern Europe. Case study research suggests that climate change is a key contributor in the growing human migration. National policies often undermine alternative solutions for climate-affected people, and their ability to rebuild their cultures and communities in territories of their choice. Mitigation and adaptation strategies have been identified as pillars of climate governance. Innovative approaches are those promoting resilience to climate change and considering the impact of climate change on local communities. Research results suggest that humanitarian, climate-related emergencies have important implications for social work.

摘要
