Intercultural Shakespeare Performance in (and out) of Malawi
摘要
For Intercultural Shakespeare Performance in (and out) of Malawi email and online interviews with Misheck Mzumara and Fumbani Phiri Jnr captured their experiences of creating Shakespeare productions in Malawi. Mzumara’s As You Like It and Phiri Jnr’s Macbeth productions were also deeply rooted in the educational landscape at the time of their creation. Alongside Mzumara and Phiri Jnr’s productions, I also consider my own production, Romeo ndi Julieti. Underpinning all three productions, was a desire from the directors to introduce Malawian audiences, and especially audiences in educational settings, to the plays of Shakespeare as live performances, and not texts to be read. Phiri Jnr and I were drawn towards Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet respectively because these plays were, at the time of their productions, on the MSCE syllabus. These productions are examined and explored in depth.
