What is the difference between empty and nothing? The book’s intellectual voyage through antiquity to the present consisted of tracing the emergence and development of both the concepts of nothing and the void, as well as their effects on the emergence of the number zero, mathematically unique and even peculiar at times. It psychologically harbors connotations and emotions that are simply not associated with other numbers. The book clarifies the meaning of zero, how to use it in mathematics and where it appears in physics, chemistry, biology, and especially food safety. It covered zero from many perspectives in many fields, each with their own context and baggage. Definitions are vague and their inference spaces are often not well defined, resulting in unintentional crossover between disparate fields. Interpreting the meaning of zero and nothing depends upon the context of the question posed. This concluding chapter summarizes the author’s personal perspective on these concepts. The most important point learned was that context is a crucial determinant of meaning, requiring operational definitions to be known before any conclusions are drawn. Of course, zero is really a unique number!
