The understanding of the electromagnetic behavior of metamaterials relies on a solid background in Maxwell equations. In view of transformation optics, the formulation of the Maxwell equations in terms of differential forms is given. Symmetry aspects are also dealt with as well as elements of scattering theory with an exposition of multiple scattering theory.
