The issue of overcrowding in emergency departments (EDs) is a pervasive phenomenon at both the national and international levels. The objective of this study is to examine the quality of ED utilization by evaluating the correlation between age and the appropriateness of access for patients at the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, Italy. This study was conducted with the implementation of descriptive statistical tools, including frequency distribution and graphical representation. The analysis identifies elderly patients as a demographic group that utilizes emergency services at a high rate. The appropriateness of access increases with the age of the patients, and inappropriate access is largely avoidable, given that the primary methods of discharge do not include hospitalization. The implementation of a quality system is not feasible without first characterizing the demand. This is particularly true for the ED, where the complexity of emergency management makes the standardization of pathways challenging. In this study, we extend the concept of quality management to include the analysis of access appropriateness and its correlation with a population demographic factor such as age.

摘要
