Over fifty years ago, Seymour Papert invented the Turtle, the world’s first educational robot. In doing so, he created tools that supported a Constructionist approach to education. A hero to many people, he challenged the established teaching methods and principles, upsetting traditional educators. What were Papert’s educational ideas? When he began formulating them, robots belonged to the pages of science fiction stories; we now have robots with what some people call Alien intelligence. These robots have become so sophisticated that Saudi Arabia has granted citizenship to one, the social robot Sophia. Many countries ponder the status of such robots; do they need protection from humans or humans from them? How will they change our world? Should we invite them to our schools and ask them to look after and educate our children? Whether we should or shouldn’t, we continue developing technology that could become robot teachers. Will that bolster the traditional factory education model, or do Papert’s ideas still have value and offer a better way forward? We will examine the background that enables us to offer an answer to these questions. In so doing, we’ll show what kind of education system the future needs and suggest a different design approach and a novel way of using social robot features to take advantage of the technology in a constructionist environment.
