Virtual Local Expatriates: Online Intercultural Connectivity for Host Country-Positioned Expatriates Operating in Virtual Work Environments
摘要
This chapter explores the evolving phenomenon of “virtual local expatriates”—expatriates who reside in their host country but engage predominantly with local colleagues through virtual work environments. As the reliance on digital communication grows, traditional face-to-face interactions are increasingly replaced by virtual exchanges, giving rise to two distinct forms of social distance: nationality-based and technology-based. These layers of distance shape the intercultural connectivity of expatriates, influencing their access to socio-emotional support, adjustment feedback, and job-related information. The analysis reveals that virtual environments may limit certain dimensions of interpersonal connection, such as the ability to foster meaningful social support and real-time feedback essential for expatriate adjustment. However, the virtual workplace also presents opportunities for reducing biases, enhancing inclusivity, and improving the accessibility of job-related information across cultural boundaries. Through theoretical exploration and empirical insights, this chapter highlights the dual nature of virtual work environments—both as barriers and as enablers in the cross-cultural connectivity of expatriates. Contributing to the broader discourse on modern cross-cultural management, the chapter provides actionable recommendations to strengthen expatriate–local relationships in virtual contexts. It advocates for culturally intelligent digital communication strategies, tailored support mechanisms, and intentional efforts to bridge the gap between nationality-based and technology-based social distances. By doing so, organizations can empower expatriates to navigate virtual work environments effectively, fostering cohesion, collaboration, and cultural understanding. Ultimately, this chapter underscores the importance of adapting expatriate management strategies to the realities of virtual work, offering insights for global leaders committed to cultivating diversity, inclusivity, and intercultural synergy in the digital age.
