A myriad of barriers, including gender identity, race, socioeconomic status, education level, immigration status, employment, and insurance status impede access to high quality healthcare for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. These barriers are historic and ingrained in our medical systems, creating deeply rooted biases and marginalization. Systemic and institutional-level changes are required to improve access and advance utilization to reduce endemic TGD healthcare disparity. Unless the stigma surrounding the TGD community is eliminated, medical access for this vulnerable population will continue to be impaired.
