This chapter by the German anthropologist Christoph Wulf continues the discussion of citizenship from the perspective of people in migrant situations. Germany, faced with a significant increase in the number of migrants, is experiencing a form of crisis in terms of “living together”, with an increase in ethnic communities and violence. Despite public policies combined with financial aid, living together peacefully remains quite a challenge. Christoph Wulf’s analysis is unambiguous: transcultural education is essential if we are to learn new ways of living together. This apprenticeship, which requires us to overcome our fear of the other, is only possible if we agree to go beyond our own cultural practices and representations.
