Facebook in Mathematics Education: Insights from a Research Group’s Practice
摘要
This chapter aims to explore the rich tapestry that emerges in the intersection between social media and mathematics education, with special emphasis on Facebook as a dynamic platform for research, learning communities and scientific dissemination. The Research Group on Informatics, Other Media, and Mathematics Education (GPIMEM) has been investigating digital technologies in the context of mathematics education in Brazil for 30 years and has been active on Facebook since 2011, sharing studies and promoting events. Integrating the humans-with-media theoretical construct, this chapter analyzes investigations conducted by group members that utilized Facebook as a virtual learning environment and also highlights the group’s Facebook page as a platform for scientific dissemination. This dynamic became even more impactful during the Covid-19 pandemic, as it played a vital role in maintaining connectivity among group members during periods of social distancing. By documenting the possibilities for research, teaching, and outreach on Facebook, we aim to inspire researchers and research groups in the use of this social media in education.
