Artificial Intelligence and Social Media in Mathematics Education

In this chapter, we consider the ongoing role that artificial intelligence (AI) can play in mathematical learning, with a particular focus on social media (SM). SM is ubiquitous in all aspects of our lives, and the exponential speed with which AI is developing, and its established connections to SM, suggests it may significantly reshape the ways in which we teach and learn mathematics in the future. We begin by tracing the history of AI from a definition of machine learning, and explore its long-term relationship with both mathematics education and SM, highlighting components of AI that have particular relevance for mathematics, with respect, for example, to mathematical processes and reasoning. We argue that mathematics education is well-poised to consider the affordances and challenges of AI, with experience built on the use of calculators, and more recently computer algebra systems (CAS). AI is an integral part of SM, and combining the power of both has significant potential benefits, including interactive learning systems, adaptive assessment using chatbots, interactive tutoring systems, and generating personalised learning systems that can adapt to the individual needs of students. Generative AI systems (such as ChatGPT and Copilot) offer both opportunities and challenges; while they might for example be used to create new content, the mathematical accuracy of such content may be questionable. We undoubtedly stand at the beginning of a new era, in which we as mathematics teachers must be agile and open to adaptation to the changing dynamics of AI in SM, ensuring we remain at the forefront of digital engagement. We conclude that as AI continues to develop, there is a pressing need for further research to identify the true extent of AI obstacles and affordances.
