In this chapter, the specific details of SoC-type FPGAs, prototyping boards, and design tool that are particularly beneficial for embedded system design are discussed in more detail. Embedded SW designer may skip this chapter at first reading. We will take a closer look at two special devices, the Altera EP5CSEMA5F31C6 and the Xilinx Zynq-Z-7010, that will be used in our larger design examples. We will study chip synthesis, timing analysis, floorplan, and power consumption. Finally, in a larger case study, the ultimate reduced instruction set computer (URISC) is designed in HDL, synthesized, and programmed.
