In this chapter, I limn not one but two different accounts of visual noise—an attempt to do justice to the openness of the conceptual space. Roughly, my two conceptions provide for a visual noise that objectively correlates with a kind of problematic, conflicted visual experience, on the one hand, and a visual noise that interferes or intervenes with our visual experiences, on the other. I take it that the field, in regard to the concept of visual noise, is, indeed, open, insofar as I am not aware of any existing account of noise that ties it to visual experiences, considered on their own terms, that is, from the first-personal perspective, as opposed to some other philosophical or scientific viewpoint. This leaves it up to us to propose, or “engineer”, some suitable concepts. In this chapter, I underscore the fact that there is room for several different proposals for a concept of visual noise. Yet not all such proposals are equal, in that they can be expected to meet certain desiderata: viz., clarity, fruitfulness, and interconnectedness with aspects of existing usage, which, in this case, is mainly to do with the ways people speak about auditory noise.

Making ‘Noise’: Two Proposals for a Concept of Visual Noise

摘要
