Surgery is a deeply artistic human endeavor shaped by tradition, innovation, and relationships with patients, peers, and the public at large. This chapter examines the complex interplay between technical expertise and humanistic skills that define the art inherent to the practice of surgery. We begin by exploring the evolution of the field from its humble origins as a technical craft to its status as an elite profession, arguing that dedication to the mastery of manual skills is an art in and of itself. We then discuss the “soft skills” that underscore the philosophy of surgical practice, from developing empathic relationships with patients to fostering creativity and innovation. In reflecting on the historical, philosophical, and humanistic dimensions of surgery, this chapter offers a comprehensive thesis on the art of surgery and suggests how we can continue to preserve and develop our art in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

摘要
