This chapter explores the scholarly contributions of Patricia Shehan Campbell through the lens of cultural humility. Author William J. Coppola describes his mentorship with Campbell and highlights how she reflected an embodiment of cultural humility in both her teaching and research. The chapter traces the gradual introduction of cultural humility into music education scholarship, highlighting its potential to address power imbalances, foster self-reflection, and promote more ethical and inclusive approaches to music pedagogy. Through consideration of Campbell’s boundary-crossing work in ethnomusicology and music education, this chapter demonstrates how her philosophy has laid a foundation for culturally responsive music education. The chapter concludes by inviting scholars to extend Campbell’s legacy through continued critical inquiry in the areas of cultural humility and culturally responsive music education.
