Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is an important tuber crop which is used as staple food in various developing countries and has always been the “poor man’s friend”. Potato plant belongs to the Solanaceae family. The origin of potato is believed to be South America, and it was introduced in India during the seventeenth century. It is fourth in ranking for food production worldwide and can provide food and nutritional security to the world. Keeping this in view, FAO has declared it as the “food for future”. Potato tuber is a modified stem which is edible and nutritious. Potato is highly susceptible to several diseases which severely impact its overall productivity; hence, it is essential to use disease-free planting material for the propagation of potato. Micropropagation techniques combined with meristem culture have been successfully incorporated into potato seed production programme. Varieties suitable for different agro-ecologies have been developed which have tremendously contributed to increasing potato productivity. Location-specific integrated potato production technology has significantly impacted yield maximization without exerting much pressure on fertilizers and water which are already scarce resources. Prospects of potato diversification in newer areas might help in providing resilience to climate change and can serve as a major breakthrough in achieving self-sufficiency in potato production.
