Advances in Molecular Breeding, Genome Editing, and Genetic Transformation of Potatoes
摘要
Potato stands as one of the world’s most essential crops, serving as a staple food for a significant portion of the global population. The continuous growth in demand for potatoes, coupled with challenges such as evolving pathogens, climate change, and the need for increased crop resilience, necessitates innovative approaches in breeding and genetic enhancement. In recent years, molecular breeding, genome editing, and genetic transformation technologies have emerged as powerful tools in addressing these challenges and elevating the potential of potato cultivation. The integration of molecular techniques, such as marker-assisted selection, has revolutionized traditional breeding methods, expediting the development of improved potato varieties with heightened resilience, disease resistance, and nutritional content. Notably, the advent of genome editing technologies, including CRISPR-Cas9, has assisted in a new era of precision in genetic modifications, allowing for targeted enhancements in potato traits. These advancements hold immense promise for addressing challenges in potato production, such as increasing yield and adapting to changing environmental conditions. This chapter highlights recent advances in molecular breeding, genome editing, and genetic transformation technologies aimed at enhancing the genetic potential of potatoes. This chapter also emphasizes the need for consideration of ethical, environmental, and regulatory aspects associated with the genetic transformation of potatoes. However, challenges related to public acceptance, regulatory frameworks, and ethical concerns must be addressed to fully realize the potential of these technologies in shaping the future of potato cultivation.
