Advances in Insect-Pest Management of Potatoes

Potatoes hold a distinctive position as a highly nutritious and easily digestible food source. Cultivated across diverse states in India, potatoes face persistent threats from various formidable insect pests. These pests, exhibiting high adaptability and prolific breeding, pose a significant risk of causing extensive damage to potato crops if left uncontrolled. In India, the cultivation of potatoes is confronted by a diverse range of insect pests that employ various mechanisms to inflict damage. The impact of climate change may result in the evolution of geographical range, resulting in increased population and, consequently, greater losses in both crop yields and post-harvest storage. The application of insect pest modeling in pest risk analysis has shown promise in providing insights and raising awareness about potential future pest risks under changing climatic conditions. In India, the insect pests of potatoes can be generally classified into three major categories: sucking pests, tuber- and root-damaging pests, and foliage feeders (defoliating pests). This classification reflects the diversity of pests affecting different parts of the potato plant and causing distinct types of damage. Notably, some potato pests in India have developed resistance to a wide array of chemicals, presenting a challenge for growers who have encountered situations where available chemicals fail to control these resistant pests. The implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies is crucial for effectively managing potato pests. The success of IPM relies on interdisciplinary research and the adoption of nonchemical control methods tailored to the specific agroecology of potato crops. The goal is to minimize or eliminate the reliance on pesticides, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly pest management practices. An in-depth understanding of individual potato production systems, including pest identification, understanding their biology, and recognition of infestation symptoms, is crucial for making decisions in the management of potato pests in an integrated manner.
