Virus infections are common in human skin and several skin diseases are associated with viruses. It is also possible that viruses are linked to common autoimmune diseases. Virus infections in human skin can be readily detected in metagenomic sequencing data using standard database searches, including both bacteriophages and human viruses. Virus infections differ from microbiome communities in that they are often transient and more variable. This affects both methodology and down-stream analyses. This chapter describes the characteristics of the human skin virus microbiome and outlines key considerations for studying it effectively.
