Skin and gut share parallel structures and functions, including barrier and immune responses. There is a well-established skin-gut-axis, where especially the gut has a significant effect on health. Microbiome, used synonymously here as microbiota, was found in 2009 and has been under intense investigation after that. Microbiome-related interventions to skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and acne vulgaris, as well as skin aging, have been done. This chapter concentrates on available human data and its relevance in skin health.
