In this chapter, I take up the horror show of Donald J. Trump and the spectacle of his rise in politics, his presidency, and his assaults on U.S. democracy. I begin with analysis of the spectacle of the 2016 election race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, the use of authoritarian populism to mobilize Trump’s base and his victory over Clinton. I then discuss some of the destructive aspects and failures of Trump’s presidency, concluding with an analysis of Trump’s failure to deal with the Covid virus and the spectacle of a murderous global epidemic, which in retrospect might be seen as the fatal spectacle and downfall of Trump’s presidency from 2016 to 2020 and a major cause of Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election by Joe Biden. A concluding epilogue will discuss how Trump deployed media spectacle to resurrect his political career for a second run against Joe Biden and then Kamela Harris in the 2024 election, which he won, assuming his second Presidency in January 2025, which has unleashed a major crisis of democracy in the U.S. as I describe in the concluding chapter.
