Legumes are known as smart crops due to their nutritional benefits, climate resilience, and soil-sustaining abilities. However, like any other crop, they are also exposed to several constraints impeding their production and benefits. Though numerous improved lines have been bred using conventional and molecular breeding, modern biotechnological tools for the development of genetically modified (GM) crops were looked upon to aid the improvement process across the species barrier. However, with the success limited to a few legumes only, advanced technologies such as genome editing have been adopted for precise improvement that in sync with speed breeding can enhance the genetic gain in legumes. This chapter brings about a brief of the status of commercialized transgenic legumes and opportunities for legume improvement via genome editing and speed breeding.
