When installing an Android application on a smartphone, it is very usual for the app to request permission to access various types of data in order to deliver maximum functionality. Though these types of permissions are necessary, users should remain vigilant if any particular app is transmitting an unusual amount of data as it might indicate a potential information theft. We have developed an android application Data Guard in which users can see the data transmission rate for all the installed applications in a 24-h time frame. This app alerts users about potentially harmful applications based on the transmission rate and enables them to take necessary action directly within the app. A brief survey revealed that users are knowledgeable about data theft from smartphone applications and they responded positively regarding the benefits and usability of Data Guard.
