In this study, a system was developed using a cyclotron-based neutron source for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). This was achieved by Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI) and the Kyoto University Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science (KURNS), formerly called the Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI). The system was approved as a medical device after the successful completion of clinical trials. It is called “NeuCure” and is now used for head and neck cancer treatment in Japan.
