Malignant Melanoma

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for malignant melanoma was initiated by Mishima and his colleagues in 1973. 10B-para-boronophenylalanine (BPA) was used by his group (Kobe University group). Clinical investigations using a thermal neutron beam were initiated for patients with cutaneous melanomas using BPA. Later, an epithermal beam was used to treat patients with brain metastases arising from malignant melanoma. Six groups have carried out BNCT for melanoma worldwide: MIT in 1994 for cutaneous melanoma, a Harvard/MIT group in 1996 for intracerebral melanoma, the Petten/Essen group in 2002 for melanoma brain metastases, an Argentinian group in 2003 for cutaneous melanoma, a Chinese group in 2016 for cutaneous melanoma, and at KUR in Japan in 2003 for cutaneous and mucosal melanoma of the head and neck. These treatments and outcomes are reviewed in this chapter. Local responses and survival of patients at KUR with cutaneous and mucosal malignant melanomas treated with BNCT are also summarized in this chapter.
