The history of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is characterized by setbacks, but also by pioneers who sought and found new beginnings. This chapter is dedicated to the researchers and physicians who conceived BNCT, used it for the first time in medicine at research reactors, and ultimately paved the way for BNCT to be possible today with accelerator-based neutron sources in hospitals. History is always a question of the observer’s point of view, but history is also dynamic and must be constantly updated. This chapter concentrates on the history of BNCT before accelerator-based neutron sources. The changes associated with this recent development and the resulting new era of BNCT will be addressed in later chapters of this book.
