Interventions for Children Affected by Parental Substance Misuse
摘要
Chapter 5 explored the lived experience of children affected by parental substance misuse (PSM) and the multiple risk factors that are often severe and enduring. To buffer against the negative impact of PSM, children need multiple protective factors, including positive and nurturing familial relationships. Alongside relationships with trusted adults within a child’s family, a vital source of protection for children is the support from professionals. This chapter explores existing models of interventions for children affected by PSM and critically engages with the limitations and the wider structural failures, including missed opportunities to support children at the earliest opportunity, raising the question of how long children should have to endure the negative impact of PSM before support is available. The limitations which include children from being afforded the right to access and receive professional support are also explored. This chapter presents a mandate for change and recommends the need for models of interventions to be designed and delivered through a trauma-informed lens, underpinned by principles of child-centred practice.
